Blackwood Brothers, 3001 S. Kinnickinnic Ave., is closing its doors.  The final evening of service at the Bay View restaurant will be on Saturday, Feb. 24.

Guests are invited to stop by on the eatery’s final evening for an evening of soulful rock from Ben Mulwana beginning at 8 p.m.

As for the closure, building owner Mario Malacara, who has also been acting as operator for the restaurant, says the concept just wasn’t taking off as well as he’d hoped.

“The plan has always been to give people a very nice place to go and turn it into a destination spot. We’ve done so much work on the building, including installing an elevator. We were hoping to put a rooftop garden on the roof and host Sol Fire events up there… but in the end, I’m not a restaurateur. I found that out. So I’m going to let someone else carry this forward.”

Instead, Malacara says, Mario Diaz, former co-owner of Triciclo Peru will be opening a new Peruvian concept called Cholo’s in the space.

While details for the new concept are still under wraps, Malacara says that the live music element for which Blackwood Brothers has developed a following will continue through the transition. Guests can stop in for a performance from Next Paperback Hero on the evening of Thursday, Feb. 29.
