Today is National Bacon Day, so here's a recipe that's cheap, easy, boozy and provides a hearty helping of Wisconsin personality.

I made it earlier this week and doubled the bacon, because I’m a glutton, and served it during a family dinner. My mother said it reminded her of "old fashioned baked beans" which was fitting because it was indeed made with SoulBoxer, a local, ready-to-pour Old Fashioned cocktail. My kids really liked it too because, well, bacon and because it has a tinge of sweetness. And remember: it’s fine for kids to eat food with alcohol in it, as long as the food is cooked.

"Boozy food is fun at holiday time," says Doug McKenzie, co-owner of SoulBoxer Cocktail Co. "After being cooked, it leaves a residual flavor behind and helps all of the other flavors meld together better."

SoulBoxer Bourbon Old Fashioned Bacon Baked Beans

2 large (15.75 ounce) cans of plain pork and beans
1/2 pound bacon (try Nueske’s to keep it local)
1 medium-size onion
Garlic salt
Ground black pepper
SoulBoxer Bourbon Old Fashioned

Finely dice bacon and onion. In a 2-3 quart saucepan, begin frying bacon on medium heat. Add onion and sauce until onion is translucent. Turn up the heat to medium-high and add approximately 1/4 cup of SoulBoxer. Turn heat to low and add beans. Simmer for 30 minutes, covered, and occasionally add spices and a little more SoulBoxer.
