A week of pizza by the slice: Classic Slice
Today's slice is a plain cheese, what you might call a classic slice, from, well, Classic Slice, 1609 E. North Ave.
This is a gargantuan slice of pizza, far outsizing the competition at 14 inches by 10 inches. It is also the thinnest crust so far. The crust is not too chewy, and neither too brittle nor too soggy. It's got some great cornmeal on the bottom, too.
Of the three I've tried so far, I'd say that, size aside, this is the most "authentically New York" slice; the sauce has the right sweetness and seasoning and ratio of cheese to sauce to crust.
It was also the most expensive at $4.50, plus tax.
Two things I didn't love about the Classic Slice experience:
- You can't see the pizza or the pizza-making station, which is obscured by a high counter. I like looking at the pizza when I order, so I can choose what catches my eye and what appears freshest. I also like to see the pizza being made. There's no reason to hide, is there?
- Not that I was in a major hurry, but Classic Slice wasn't busy and yet it seemed to take an unusually long time to get a single slice heated up.
But the slice is worth the wait, in the end, so these are perhaps small quibbles.

Classic Slice makes their slices to order so that is the reason for the wait. It's not sitting under heat lamps for hours and getting "crisped up" in the oven like Ian's and Leonardo's. Also, Classic Slice has a lunch special that includes a soda so for $5, it's not a bad deal at all.

This is article is poorly written. There are very basic grammar mistakes. If this was a long and involved article I could understand missing something. However, this article is brief and fraught with bad writing and errors. The picture makes the food look like school lunch pizza. I don't understand why a quality picture was not included. The writer states that he likes the pizza. If that is the case then represent your opinion with your photograph and your writing. If OnMilwaukee is serious about having a respectable website they should hire editors and attempt to show quality control.

Classic slice is my go to for a slice. I always call ahead so I avoid the wait. Even if I don't, it's well worth the wait. You can play Donkey Kong while your pizza cooks. Only other place that comes close to a good NY slice is Leonardo's in Mequon.

I love Classic Slice! The crust is indeed thin, crispy and delicious. Also of note - they offer gluten free and whole wheat crusts, and they are equally delicious! Their prices are high - but I feel that they are worth it. The slices are large enough to share while still feeling satisified.

For a variety of reasons, I've been thinking about Front Street, which now seems so ironically named, fronting as it does onto nothing and serving as the ultimate definition of a Milwaukee "backstreet." In my mind, I see something much different that can be seen on the block today.

The bowling alleys are long gone, but the loss has never affected the popularity of The Horse & Plow pub in The American Club at Kohler.
