I had been under the impression, proven false, that the Turkish restaurant, Tulip, had closed at some point.
So I was surprised when I found it open in the Third Ward last week and decided to give it a try before theater. What I found was a wonderful restaurant with very nice food and one of the best desserts I've ever had anywhere.
It's a very good-looking place and on a Friday night managed to fill a lot of tables as the dinner hour progressed.
I had a great dish of four French cut lamb chops, served under a delightful sauce of wild mushroom couscous and a bit of grilled asparagus.
I'm not usually much of a dessert guy, but our server recommended something called kadayif and I took the plunge. Talk about your good decisions.
Kadayif is made from shredded wheat, then mixed with some sugar and milk. Then they add some lemon juice and zest, and butter and put it in a small round baking dish. It's baked until a crispy crust forms on the top and then a syrup and crushed pistachio nuts are dropped into the center of the dish
It was sweet, yes, but not overly so. It kind of tasted something like something that if McDonald's could figure out how to make it they'd sell millions and millions. It alone is worth the trip to Tulip.
Hardgenimiguy - Your experience had to be an isolated experience. My husband and I have eaten here numerous times over the last two years and have had excellent experiences every time. Drinks and bread with oil arrive promptly. Servers really care about good table service. Waiters do disappear into the back at times but a wave at another worker brings them promptly to your table. The food is excellent with ample choices. The Sultan's platter makes a fun date night dinner for two. Portion sizes are just enough to fill you and the atmosphere is great. It's in a perfect spot for an after dinner walk through the Ward or to easily get to the Summerfest grounds.
My significent other and i ate at the TULIP restaurant a year ago. Fantastic atmosphere and BAD food. We both agreed, one of the worst restaurant meals we have ever been served. Once seated we had to wait 20 minutes for anyone to show up. We placed our order.Once the bad meals arrived we never saw our waiter again. We wanted our bill--finally, had to go to the front desk to ask for it. Easily, we both could have left without paying. We have never been back and will never return. How to such restaurants stay in business?

I have been kind of out of commission for more than 40 days with a health difficulty and it's been a real long haul. I think I'm in the final couple of weeks before I get to go home, but lately I've been thinking a lot about what things I miss the most.

The Journal Sentinel just hired someone named David Paulsen to be its new Breaking News Editor. Paulsen comes to the paper after stints as a reporter in Wausau and Poughkeepsie, N. Y. and two years at Fox News. Well, when the announcement was made the cries from staffers in the newsroom in Downtown Milwaukee could be heard throughout the civilized world.

For months, all the pro leagues had been preparing for this announcement from some athlete. They had formed alliances with LGBT groups, laying plans for how to respond and how to handle the inevitable public reaction. But even in Wisconsin, we have moved beyond this kind of homophobic bull crap.

Do something great and we adore our heroes with shouts, screams and applause. We care and we show we care. What are we to do when they screw something up? We care about them just as much and ignoring their failure should not be part of this equation. Not caring is worse, much worse, than disapproving. We have to let them know that we who depend on them so much are disappointed.

Enough young people have been convinced they should care about using the proper fork that a number of colleges and universities in Milwaukee have started holding etiquette classes for students headed out for job interview lunches and dinners. I see no reason, however, to limit this to meals. Think of all the opportunities these kids are missing.
