Tilt that kilt, Hooters meets the Irish pub
Have you walked past the 770 N. Jefferson St. building recently? The former Senior Frogs, Howl at the Moon, etc. space is laced with imagery touting Blackthorn Pub and Grill.
Blackthorn is expected to open later this month and will be the first non-typical Irish pub in the Milwaukee area. Judging from its Web site and the photos that grace its windows, it also will be the first Irish pub with skirts, high heels and attitude.
Indeed, Irish and Scottish pubs are big business across America and now this somewhat new flavor of pub puts attractive cast members (if you will) front and center for your drinking and dining experience.
The Tilted Kilt Pub and Eatery, one such chain of new wave Irish Pubs, already has four Wisconsin locations (in Green Bay, Madison, Stevens Point and Oshkosh) and locations in 18 states. Milwaukee, of course, doesn't have a national Irish pub player yet but is full of many locally owned Irish pubs.Â
According to city records and The Irish Emigrant, Taha Aitali, is the owner of Milwaukee's Blackthorn Pub and Grill. He also owns Waukesha-based Compass International Aerospace.

Looks like another boring place that was granted a liquor license in/near the downtown area. Whats the longest anyone has lasted in that spot anyway? My Office will continue to reign supreme.

Looks like someone didn't want to pay the Tilted Kilt's franchise fees.
Does Milwaukee have the talent to properly staff these places?
Closed by the end of 2011.

Much as I enjoy scantily-clad women with attitude, the trend of requiring them to be scantily clad and have attitude as part of your corporate branding strategy is becoming a bit tiresome. Hooters, fine. Tilted Kilt? Okay, whatever. Now this, which is different from the Tilted Kilt how exactly? And while out West a few weeks ago, we dined at an exciting new Sushi place called... are you ready?... "Miso Harney Sushi." Get it? Ha ha ha ha ha ha. Miso Harney. Ha ha ha. A sushi place featuring, yes, scantily-clad women with attitude. Also loud hip-hop played by live DJ's.

When I saw the word "kilt" I was assuming (or hoping, more likely) they would be on men. But of course not. I don't think this cheap thrill won't sell another Irish pub to the Milwaukee scene. I agree with dtruck. Yawn!

Even on the brightest and most beautiful day, the walkway under the freeway on Water Street between Downtown and the Third Ward is gloomy. At night, it's (of course) even darker and intimidating for many. This needs to change.
