M to the Midwest

Many local media have covered Art Suarez’s grass roots effort to "save" Midwest Airlines. So after he called again today, I figured I’d give the guy some love.

Suarez, who claims he’s just huge fan of the airline, has been nothing but persistent with e-mail, phone calls, rallies, signs and other communication. He predics that Midwest will be sold by year’s end if we don’t rise up. He’s buying individual shares of the airline and working hard to promote WILovesMidwestAirlines.com.  I also get the sense that the guy likes seeing his name in print and knows a bit more about media relations than he lets on.

Gotta give the guy the credit, though.  It’s easy to be cynical about such grass roots efforts and people usually (sadly) have motives that transcend the cause. But, as my wife reminded me this morning, too many people today are against things. Here’s a guy that’s for something.

He’s even generated what might be the first "rap song" (I use that term very loosely) featuring our hometown airline. A link to the YouTube version is at the end. Warning, it’s not exactly Grammy-award winning material.

Midwest needs to better define who their customer is and solely market to that customer. Their marketing could use big improvement. Keep the cash flow good and investors happy, then no worry about a takeover.

Art is right in doing what he's doing, and it's obvious that he is from out of town because Milwaukeans by nature do not stick their necks out. Hope he infects the local culture.

I really don't care what his motives are. But what I so care about is supporting the home team, in this case being Midwest.

Let's face it. Loosing this company would blow a major chunk off our image of being a progressive, forward thinking metro.
