Biden's Chains
"Unchain Wall Street! He (Romney) would put you all back in chains!" Vice President Joe Biden in Danville, VA on Aug. 14 (1)
Biden, long known for his gaffes and hyperbolic speech (as well as use of vulgarity), said later that he meant that the Republicans would put the "middle-class" in "chains" of debt to the banks. But, given that about half of his audience was black, he either knew, or should have known, that this exclamation would evoke ancestral memories of the chains of slavery, which were very real in Virginia until the end of the Civil War. Just as this blog lambasted State Rep. Elizabeth Coggs for inflaming racial animosity to win an election (2) here in Milwaukee, it must now blast Biden for the egregious metaphor about "putting you all back in chains."
Ironically, the Republican Party was created in 1854 as an anti-slavery party, and Republican President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation. Republicans in Congress spearheaded the passage of the Thirteenth Amendment, which abolished slavery. So Biden's remarks were especially inappropriate.
Here is what Biden should have said: "If the Republicans win and implement their programs, you won't have to buy health insurance, and if you get sick or hurt, just go to the nearest hospital emergency room and you will be treated anyway. If you become a hedge-fund manager, professional athlete, rock or movie star, corporate executive or win a big lottery, you will enjoy a hefty tax-cut. But you will have to save for your own retirement. And if your mother gets sick and needs an expensive treatment that her insurance won't cover, you may have to spend your retirement savings to save her life. Instead of a faceless government "death panel" deciding her fate, you and your siblings will be the "death panel!" If you encounter financial difficulties, don't count on Big Government to help you, you're on your own!"
It's not slavery, but it is bad enough. Biden does not need chains to make his point.
